Poke-Amph: News
The New Fairy Pokemon Type
by Poke-Amph on June 11, 2013

sylveon-vs-hydreigon-artThe 18th Pokemon type was revealed during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation. The long rumored Fairy type is real. It’s the first new type introduction since Dark and Steel were introduced in Gold and Silver over 10 years ago.

Fairy-type attacks are super effective against Dragon-type Pokemon. Along with Ice and Dragon itself, this brings the number of Dragon weaknesses to three. The E3 X and Y trailer hinted that more information will be announced in the future, most likely concerning more weaknesses and resistances.

Fairy Wind and Moonblast were the first two Fairy-type moves revealed. Gardevoir was shown using Fairy Wind. Sylveon used Moonblast, which calls upon the power of the moon to deal damage and lower the target Pokemon’s Attack.

Of the newly introduced X and Y Pokemon, only Sylveon is known to be Fairy type. Many older Pokemon will attain the Fairy type including Jigglypuff, Marill, and Gardevoir. This is similar to Magnemite and Magneton acquiring the Steel type in Gold and Silver.¬†All Fairy-type Pokemon have not been revealed yet, with more to be announced in the future. It’s safe to assume Clefairy will join this list, considering it has fairy in its name and the move Moonblast falls in line with Clefairy’s origin story.

You’ll be able to catch your own Fairy-type Pokemon when X and Y release worldwide on October 12th.
